Major fire! Argentina's beef factory shuts down, China's imports are affected
At 6:00 p.m. on February 17,2025, a sudden major fire swept through a head beef processing plant_2025 in Argentina. Firefighters finally brought the fire under control after three hours of fighting, but the factory building was severely damaged. Fortunately, all 2000 employees were safely evacuated from the fire, and there have been no reports of casualties. However, the specific cause of the fire and the loss remain to be further assessed.
After the fire, Claudio Rodriguez, the plant's president, told the media for the first time nearly a week later that the catastrophic fire had destroyed almost all of the plant's equipment, forcing the plant to declare an indefinite halt to slaughtering activities.
As one of the largest meat processing enterprises in China, Plant 2025 (also known as Gorinari Slaughterhouse) butchered up to 1400 heads a day. Its products not only occupy a place in the domestic market, but also are exported to domestic and overseas markets. According to statistics, the slaughter volume of the factory reached 340,000 in 2024, ranking the third in China, indicating its important position in Argentine beef industry.
More crucially, the factory is also one of Argentina's important channels for delivering beef to China. Every month, it sends 3,500 - 4,000 tons of beef to China, which means 40,000 - 50,000 tons of beef will be shipped to China from this channel a year. Therefore, the fire will not only affect the overall supply of Argentine beef, but also directly affect the export volume and price of Argentine beef to China.
For China consumers, a shortage of Argentine beef is likely to lead to higher prices on the market. In response to this potential supply shortage and price increase, China may increase imports from other beef exporting countries such as Brazil, Australia or the United States to stabilize beef supply and prices in the domestic market. Meanwhile, domestic beef producers are likely to seize the opportunity to increase production to compensate for some of the decline in imports.
However, it is worth noting that, despite the fire, the official website of the General Administration of Customs of China currently shows that the qualification of Argentina 2025 Plant to export to China is still in "valid" status. That means, at least officially, the plant's beef is still likely to continue to enter the China market.
So, what will happen to beef prices? This is undoubtedly a problem worthy of attention.
