China's Ministry of Commerce's latest response to the US imposition of a 10% tariff on Chinese exports to the United States
On the evening of February 27,2025, Beijing time, US President Trump announced on his social media that he would formally impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico on March 4, and would impose an additional 10% tariff on China on the same day.
As a 10% tariff increase was confirmed on February 1, the US will now impose a 20% tariff on China.
With regard to the tariff increase, according to an external report, Trump gave the reason that "drugs are still pouring into our country from Mexico and Canada at a very high and unacceptable level" and believed that "a large part" of these drugs were made in China.
On February 28, a spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce made a statement on the US announcement that it threatened to impose another tariff on Chinese exports to the United States on the grounds of fentanyl and other issues. China is strongly dissatisfied with this and firmly opposes it. If the US side insists on going its own way, China will take all necessary countermeasures to firmly safeguard its rights and interests.
China is one of the countries with the strictest and most thorough anti-drug policies in the world. China and the United States have carried out extensive and in-depth anti-drug cooperation and achieved remarkable results. However, the US side "threw the pot and blamed it," making mistakes again and again, imposing tariffs on China products exported to the United States on the grounds of fentanyl issue. This move by the United States ignores the facts, international trade rules and the voices of all parties. It is a typical act of unilateralism and bullying.
China has repeatedly stated that the unilateral tariffs of the United States violate WTO rules and undermine the multilateral trading system. They will not only fail to solve their own problems, but will also undermine Sino-US economic and trade cooperation and the normal international trade order. China urges the US side to respect the rights and interests of other countries and immediately withdraw unilateral tariff measures that are unreasonable and unfounded and harm others. It is hoped that the US side will treat and handle the issue objectively and rationally and return to the correct track of properly resolving differences through dialogue on an equal footing as soon as possible.
